Westland High School Galloway Ohio
Overview
Westland High School was opened in 1970 as a state of the art high school. It was the first school in Ohio with carpeting throughout. The structure was air conditioned, had no windows that opened and had an approximate 180,000 square feet footprint. The structure had a flat roof that leaked shortly after the building opened. The central HVAC system utilized the above ceiling space as a building-wide return air plenum. Cellulose fireproofing was applied under each of the five penthouses.
After 30 years of a leaking roof, extensive mold growth was detected in the return and supply air system and in the fireproofing material. Among the mold species present was Stachybotrys in moderate concentrations.
To keep the building open to the 2200 students until remediation could begin, the VaporGard process was utilized to keep the mold levels within an acceptable range, equal to ambient.
The remediation team utilized at the Arizona Heart Hospital was put in place. The major problem was time as there was only 50 days to completely decontaminate the facility, remove and replace the fireproofing, bioclean the facility, VaporGard and apply the Aegis Microbe Shield. Much of the carpeting was replaced as was the entire drop in ceiling system. HealthSafe USA conducted the over site and testing. Spray Systems of Phoenix Arizona supplied the 60 man team to conduct the remediation work and BioGard Environmental Services, Inc. completed the VaporGard and the Aegis process. The project was completed on time and within budget. A roof repair and replacement was conducted concurrently with the rem ediation process.
The 12,000 feet of supply duct was cleaned, stabilized and sanitized using VaporGard and Aegis Antimicrobial.
