Eliminate odor, raise IAQ

There are many methods that will keep odor at a minimum, and quality air at a maximum in facility restrooms. Deodorizers play their part in masking odors or creating scents pleasant to the noses of occupants.

However, according to the EPA’s Indoor Air Quality Tools for Schools Checklist, a simple walkthrough inspection can indicate where many odors come from.

The following are some general considerations:

  • Are temperatures and humidity within acceptable ranges? Higher temperatures and humidity can create a breeding ground for mildew and mold.
  • Is air flowing into and out of the room as designed?
  • Are supply and exhaust vents free from blockage or obstruction?
  • Are exhaust fans operating?
  • Are areas free of objectionable odors? A more frequent and/or thorough cleaning can get rid of offensive odors such as urine.
  • No signs of unresolved or ongoing water damage?
  • No signs of mold or mildew growth?
  • Do occupants report any concerns or problems?
  • Do all drains have traps?
  • Are drain traps filled with water (floor drains, sinks toilets)?
  • Are odorous or hazardous chemicals used with adequate ventilation and only when building is unoccupied?

Taking care of these aspects in facility restrooms could mitigate long-term odor problems and promote better IAQ.
