What is AEGIS?

What is AEGIS®?

What is Aegis Microbe Shield?

Aegis is a solution that provides a treated surface with a constant active antimicrobial action. Aegis is equipped with a micropolymer coating which mechanically destroys the bacteria, mold, fungus and their allergens on contact. This revolutionary, high-efficiency antibacterial technology was developed to be used for your environment.

With more than 40 years of testing, Aegis technology has defined its history of safe use. It has proven to be reliable and an effective way of controlling a range of microbes, including mold, mildew, bacteria, algae and fungi on surfaces.

On an untreated surface, germs and bacteria can triple in number every 15 minutes. Aegis Asia Surface protection provides an incredibly residual effect that inhibits the growth of microbes. Aegis is an international preventive antimicrobial spray treatment for your environment.

How does AEGIS Technology Work?

When applying to an untreated surfaces, Aegis forms a colourless, odourless, co-polymer that is positively charged and attracts, electrocutes and ruptures a negatively charged cell membrane of a microbe.

Microorganisms that come into contact with a treated surface incur an instant molecular reaction occurs which entails Aegis rupturing the membrane of the negatively charged cell.

Considering nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the antimicrobials efficacy is not lost and its molecule stands ready to fight again.

What makes Aegis Microbe Shield’s
Chemistry Unique?

The technical active ingredient is a conventional quaternary ammonium salt (organo) which is chemically spliced to a silane molecule, resulting in a highly active molecule that has both tenacious bonding capabilities as well as excellent antimicrobial properties.

(3-trimethoxsilyl propyldimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride)

During the application process, stable bonds between OH- sites on the AEGIS® molecule and the positive charge on the nitrogen atoms (N+) form. The result of this chemical process is the creation of a large co-polymer chemically bonding AEGIS® to the target substrate.

The positively charged atom of nitrogen attracts the negatively charged cell walls of bacteria, molds, mildew, and fungi. The silane base enables the antimicrobial to anchor securely onto the substrate providing long-lasting antimicrobial product protection. The long molecular chain or “spike” is the part that comes into contact and disrupts the cell membranes.

Commonly Treated Surfaces

Aegis can be used on both hard and soft non-food preparation surfaces. Aegis Asia has ensured that we have efficacy testing done on a wide range of surfaces including plastic, wood, metal, glass and textiles.

Application Techniques

Aegis can either be directly integrated into the manufacturing process or applied onsite using a combination of spray and wipe, fogging or electrostatic sprayers. AEGIS should only be applied by trained professionals.

AEGIS is registered with health authorities around the world including:

Health Canada: PCP# 15133

US Environmental Protection Agency: 64881-1 & 64881-7

European Union: AEGIS is listed as PT-7 and PT-9 with the Registration, Evaluation, Authorization and Restriction of Chemicals (REACH) and as PT-2 in the United Kingdom

AEGIS Physical Properties

Clear and Odorless

Clear, Colorless and Odorless

Aegis does not alter the appearance of material properties of any treated surface.

Non-flammable

Non-flammable

Aegis has undergone extensive third-party fire, smoke and toxicity testing to demonstrate that it is non-flammable and safe for the transit industry.

Non-toxic

Non-toxic

Aegis is non-toxic and has approval for use on a wide range of consumer products and surfaces.

No Heavy Metals

No Heavy Metals

Aegis does not contain any metals or arsenic and will not negatively affect ground water.

Non-leaching

Non-leaching

Unlike traditional antimicrobials that work by poisoning cells, AEGIS is a non-leaching agent. Which means it is chemically bonded on the treated surface at molecular level and is designed to provide a long-lasting antimicrobial protection ‘in situ’ and render microbes unviable by inert physical (non-toxic) means.

No VOCs

No VOCs

Independent third party testing has demonstrated that when applied to a surface, Aegis does not produce any harmful air borne toxins.
